I grew up in a place called Pine Creek Ridge, a small town tucked somewhere between endless woods and forgotten county roads. The kind of town where folks still wave at each other, even when they don’t remember your name. Nothing big ever happens here. Nothing worth the news.
At least that’s what we all believed.
Last night changed that.
Around 2:17 AM, most of the town was asleep. The only lights still on were at Ron’s Gas & Grocery and the sheriff’s office. I was driving home from my night shift, taking County Road 46, the one everyone avoids after dark. Too many deer. Too many blind curves. Too quiet.
As I came around the bend near Blackwater Bridge, I saw something in the middle of the road. At first, I thought it was a big dog. Then it stood up. Not like a man stands. More like something that’s learning how.
Tall. Lean. Shoulders hunched forward. Light from my headlights hit its eyes, and they glowed like metal catching fire. I froze. My hands locked on the wheel. Before I could even breathe, it bolted into the trees with a speed I’ve never seen in any animal around here.
I didn’t say a word to anyone that night. I figured maybe I was tired, maybe my mind played a trick on me. But this morning, the whole town was buzzing.
Three different locals claimed they saw “something” too.
Old man Travers said he heard heavy footsteps outside his barn and found deep scratches on the wooden door. Jenna McCormick, who lives off Maple Hollow, swore she saw a figure sprinting across her back pasture. And the weirdest one came from a trucker passing through who called in a report of a “large wolf-like creature walking upright.”
What made everybody panic wasn’t the sightings. It was the sheriff’s reaction.
Sheriff Daniels never talks much, but today he wouldn’t say anything at all. He shut down questions. Closed the station early. Put two deputies on patrol along the tree line near Blackwater Bridge. When reporters tried asking what was going on, he just said, “It’s nothing you folks need to worry about,” and walked back inside.
People noticed the scratches on his truck too. Long ones. Fresh.
We’ve had bear sightings before. We’ve had coyotes. But no one in this town has ever seen something like this. And the sheriff acting nervous? That’s the part that’s got everybody shaken.
Maybe it was a wild animal. Maybe it wasn’t. All I know is this:
I’ve taken County Road 46 every night for years. I’ve seen deer, foxes, stray dogs, even a cougar once. Whatever stood in front of me wasn’t any of those. It looked at me like it knew exactly what it was doing out there.
So yeah…
Are werewolves real?
I’m not saying yes.
I’m not saying no.
I’m just saying a whole town in rural America didn’t sleep last night.
And if you ever find yourself driving down County Road 46 after midnight…
keep your doors locked.
keep your eyes on the road.
and if something steps out of the trees…
don’t stop.
