His fur, a perfectly tailored black-and-white tuxedo

Look at him. See this creature of absolute grace and singularity. His deep green eyes stare at you with palpable intelligence and mischief. His fur, a perfectly tailored black-and-white tuxedo, contrasts beautifully with his cheerful “pearl necklace.” He lies there, on my bed, majestic and serene.

And yet… if you look closely, you’ll notice that small mouth, that slightly misaligned jaw, that constant “smile” caused by a physical malformation. This is the detail that, for others, was an obstacle, an unacceptable flaw.

I met my love during a visit to the shelter. He had been there longer than anyone else. People passed his kennel, stopping for the “perfect” kittens, the silky long-haired cats, or those without a history. For him, there was a quick glance, often followed by an embarrassed shrug or, worse, an unpleasant comment. “He looks funny,” “He always looks like his teeth are out,” “He’s not particularly pretty”… These murderous phrases sealed his fate of prolonged waiting.

But I, I saw something else. When our eyes met, there was no pity; there was a flash of connection. He immediately started purring with a sound like a strong motor, as if to compensate for the lack of physical “perfection” with overflowing affection. He rubbed his small head against the bars, showing me his pure soul, his immense heart, without any reservation.

In his eyes, I saw the silent gratitude of a being who knows what it means to be judged and who, despite everything, offers its unconditional love.

I chose the soul over the appearance. I chose the love hidden behind the singularity. This is not an “adoption out of pity”; it is an adoption out of conviction. He is mine, my prince with the unique smile, and he is the living proof that the beauty of a being lies in its capacity to love and be loved, not in the symmetry of its muzzle. He is not “disabled” by his mouth; he is simply unique and deserves the same adoration as any other animal. His long stay at the shelter is over. His place is here, on this colorful duvet, at the center of our life, at the center of my heart.

😡 The Cult of Sterile Perfection 💔

And here, the outburst is inevitable. I address that part of humanity obsessed with images, with stereotypical perfection, even when choosing an animal companion.

You left a diamond behind because all you wanted was a polished pebble!

How can you call yourselves “animal lovers” when your selection is subject to runway criteria? You seek an animal that flatters your ego, that is the reflection of an ideal, aseptic image for social networks. A small jaw defect, a slightly limping paw, a scar, or fur that doesn’t grow back perfectly—and snap! The animal is downgraded, thrown into the category of the “unsellable.”

Your obsession with physical perfection is morally despicable! It testifies to a terrifying superficiality. Adopting means committing to a living being, with its weaknesses, its imperfections, and the uncertainties of life. Who are you to judge the worth of a life based on facial symmetry?

This cat had to wait months, perhaps years, because of a small anatomical difference. Meanwhile, you lined up to adopt the most perfect, the “cutest,” and therefore the quickest-to-be-adopted kitten. Your aesthetically motivated choice had a direct impact on the psychological well-being of this animal, condemning it to the solitude and insecurity of the shelter.

And this goes far beyond shelters. This same mentality promotes the mass breeding of purebred animals to obtain “ideal” traits (flat noses, immense eyes) that often compromise their health. This same mentality leads to an injured cat or an old dog being seen as a burden, even though they are the ones most in need of love.

An animal is not a fashion accessory! Its ability to love you is infinite, whether it has two eyes or just one, whether its teeth are straight or not. The love it gives you has no flaws, and that is the only thing that matters.

So, the next time you visit a shelter, please, look beyond the coat. Look for the soul, the beating heart, the flame of personality. That is where true, life-changing beauty lies. And by saving these “less perfect” ones, you prove that you, humans, are worthy of the unconditional love they offer.

My little prince, you don’t need validation from the world. You have my home, my heart, and the certainty that for me, you are the most beautiful of all.
